October 22, 2020. Manila, Philippines. In celebration of the 63rd Nurses week in the Philippines, the Health Carousel Philippines, Inc. in partnership with DAISY Foundation and Health Carousel, LLC awarded an extraordinary nurse who helped a homeless woman delivered her baby in the street. This story became viral in social media, and headlines of several local newspapers. Despite the threat of coronavirus, this nurse fearlessly helped the woman unknown to her while she was on her way to work. Mary Lorraine Pingol, a Registered Nurse in the Philippines received the prestigious DAISY award thru a virtual ceremony held on October 22, 2020. The ceremony was attended by Dr. Pauleen Faustino, Assistant Manager of Onsite Clinic Management and Health Promotion of Medicard Philippines, where Lorraine is currently employed, Ms. Connie Dela Cruz, President of Health Carousel Philippines, Inc., Ms. Nyra Colinares, Vice President, and all the members of the DAISY Award Committee. Representatives from Health Carousel, LLC, Earl Dalton, CNO, and Christy Craft, Chairman of DAISY, HCLLC sent their messages through recorded video.

The DAISY Award is given to extraordinary nurses. DAISY stands for Diseases Attacking the Immune System. The foundation was established by members of the family of Patrick Barnes who died of complications of the auto-immune disease ITP. While Patrick was in the hospital, he and the family experienced extraordinary care from nurses. The family was very impressed by the clinical care Patricks nurses provided, but what really overwhelmed them was the compassion and kindness that his nurses brought to Patricks bedside day in and day out. The nurses sensitivity made a great difference in Barnes experience, and they wanted to say Thank you to nurses for the extraordinary care they provided to patients and families every day. So, Patricks family created the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses.

Health Carousel believes that all nurses in the Philippines are compassionate and kind to their patients and to other people but there is always one that is an extraordinary nurse in every hospital or other facility and in other places who deserve to be recognized.

Lorraine is not working in the hospital but she showed her compassion and kindness as a nurse when she met a person who was in an emergency situation and in need of her help. Despite running late to her work, when she saw the condition of the woman, she stopped and helped safely deliver a baby girl. Her last time to assist in the delivery ward was a decade ago but still, she did not hesitate to do what should be done. The placenta had already been expelled when she was called and she needed to pull it out completely and clamp and cut the umbilical cord. This act showed that she is an extraordinary nurse that is truly deserving of a DAISY Award, said Connie Dela Cruz, President of Health Carousel Philippines.

We pledged to be good Samaritans, Wherever you are, even when youre outside work, when anyone needs you, in the name of humanity, you have to help because youre a nurse., Lorrainne said.

Lorraine's story is very inspiring. She graduated in 2011 with honor as Cum Laude and passed the board that year. She was diagnosed with leukemia in 2013 and had been in remission for the past six years, prompting her to give up working in a hospital to avoid compromising her immune system. Though she is not working in a hospital, she works as a company nurse in Medicard and provides patient care to sick and injured employees.
